MEDIA
The media, and pop culture have a huge influence on our lives and the generations that follow. Our thought processes, perspectives, languages, even culture is greatly determined by media in which we highly regard. Some information may be beneficial, some may be harmful. For example, popular cartoon animations depict strong female leads and a male who's only quest in life is to fight the bad guy and win the girl. Instead, many argue that there should be a strong male lead who's only mission in life isn't to conquer something, or gain ownership of someone, they should partner with them. Many do not realize the impact that even the slightest details of popular media have on children and their growth. Constantly surrounded in today's world by racy magazines, shows, and even children's shows that ride a fine line of appropriateness, it is scary to think about what the generations to follow will develop into.

I did not really notice how so many of the male characters are doing the same thing, and the female characters often are doing much less until we watch the video about it. Most cartoons don't present female characters with the same potential and power as their male counterparts.

ReplyDeleteOlivia, I completely agree with you in that todays media is sending young kids the wrong message. There needs to be more shows and movies with a strong female lead since so many of the old ones have male leads.
ReplyDeleteIn my film studies class we are leaning about how media playes into societies views of the older generation. I never would have thought that the media can play such a big role.
ReplyDeleteMy blog this week was similar to this. Media is literally crazy now compared to years ago.. We need to teach younger generations that it is not okay for them to act like the cartoons, or movies tell us to. It is important they don't grow up thinking it's okay to act dumb for a boy, or be a bad boy to get a good girl. Life isn't like that but the younger generations think it is.
